Agua by Agua Bendita: Redefining Resort Wear with Colombian Craftsmanship

Catalina Álvarez and Mariana Hinestroza, the founders of Agua by Agua Bendita, have turned their Medellín-based label into a global phenomenon, offering an array of luxurious resort-ready clothing. More than just a seasonal collection, their brand embodies a lifestyle—a commitment to the art of vacation dressing paired with deep roots in Colombian craftsmanship.

Humble Beginnings with Big Dreams

Two decades ago, Álvarez and Hinestroza began their journey by repurposing textile scraps, crafting swimwear on a sewing machine belonging to Álvarez’s grandmother. Their earliest designs, adorned with traditional scapular amulets, were a hit among friends. What started as a local project quickly gained international attention, paving the way for their ready-to-wear line, Agua by Agua Bendita, in 2018.

Their collaboration with Gucci Vault in 2023 marked a significant milestone. The Italian luxury house featured the duo as its first Latin American label, a moment Álvarez calls “our greatest dream.”

A Celebration of Colombian Biodiversity

Colombia’s vibrant flora and fauna inspire every Agua by Agua Bendita piece. Hinestroza proudly highlights the country’s unparalleled biodiversity, evident in designs like a white dress adorned with flower-themed embroidery. This regional pride underscores the brand’s ethos: to craft garments that are both luxurious and deeply connected to their roots.

Empowering Women, Stitch by Stitch

Early on, Álvarez and Hinestroza realized they couldn’t meet growing demand alone. They began collaborating with local female artisans, their “AB Hearts,” who bring intricate embroidery to life. Each garment, painstakingly crafted, tells a story of dedication and tradition, making every purchase a unique investment in Colombian artistry.

Sustainability Meets Style

In 2023, the brand introduced Ciclos, a resale program that allows customers to buy or sell items from previous collections. Hinestroza believes their garments are “heirlooms” designed to endure, but the program ensures that each piece can find a second life—a reflection of their commitment to sustainable fashion.

Expanding Horizons

While Agua by Agua Bendita is synonymous with resort wear, Álvarez and Hinestroza are venturing into colder climates. This fall, they debuted their first knitwear line, featuring baby alpaca wool in collaboration with Peruvian brand Escvdo. Despite their evolving portfolio, the focus remains on celebrating regional craftsmanship while appealing to a global audience.

A Global Vision, Rooted in Colombia

Álvarez and Hinestroza aim to dress women worldwide without diluting their Colombian identity. “We want women to feel like they’re wearing a beautiful brand designed by Colombian minds and developed by Colombian hands,” says Hinestroza. From vibrant linen dresses to handcrafted swimwear, their designs capture the spirit of endless summer while championing Colombian creativity on a global stage.
